92nd Rotary International
San Antonio, Texas, USA
June 24-25, 2001
by Rtn. Amy C. Reyes
On the 23rd day of June, 2001, we departed San Diego Lindbergh International Airport to San Antonio, Texas. It is a two-hour flight with a brief stop over in Phoenix, Arizona. Our plane, Southwest Airlines, arrived San Antonio Airport at 9:00 p.m. Posters and streamers are everywhere in the airport to welcome Rotarians and Guests to the Rotary Fiesta, the 92nd RI Convention. The members of the host organization, Rotary Club of San Antonio Texas, with uniform wearing their cowboy hats and armband are ready to welcome and ushered delegates, the Rotary way of hospitality.
The Riverwalk Plaza Hotel, where we billeted is a few blocks away from Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. This building was rushed to completion on time for the 92nd RI Annual Convention. The sufficient numbers of shuttle bus servicing the delegates started at 7:00 a.m. to pick-up Rotarians from their respective hotels to the convention hall and vice versa until 10:00 p.m. In the morning of the 24th of June, I registered at Exhibit Hall B to get my credential with a $10-food voucher redeemable at the House of Friendship Food Court. A Rotary gift bag that contains a copy of "Frank Talk", a new book authored by RI President Frank J. Devlyn, a pair of sunglass and other gift items. The camaraderie and fellowship in the House of Friendship was superb. Different Rotary activities and workshop are informative and full of ideas and have the opportunity to learn the many services provided by Rotary International. I met Rotarians from around the world, collected signatures from delegates in different countries. I was honored to participate in the planning "Flower the Tower of America" behind the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. On the spacious food court where thousand of delegates take their meals, I enjoyed the delicious Mexican foods, the grilled jumbo turkey legs and the big and juicy hamburger at the market street restaurant.
At 3:330 p.m., the opening Plenary Session was held at The Alamadome, a walking distance from H. B. Gonzales Convention Center, about 35,000 Rotarians around the world convened in the big dome. This is the most organized traditional Rotary program and listened to the best speakers of the world leader of the Rotary International. The foremost of this is the message of President George W. Bush of U.S.A. and President Vicente Fox of Mexico on the giant screen. The presentation of flags of the Rotary World on horseback in front of the big stage and the performance of the best and ever trained horses of Texas were unique and amazing. The entertainment and musical prelude performed by the Alamadome Mariachi Campañas de America, ballet Folklorro and the famous band of Texas was a total entertainment and exciting.
In the morning of June 25, we enjoyed cruising around the romantic San Antonio River for free exclusive for the Rotarians, where hundreds of shops, boutiques, cozy restaurants and tropical foliage live in the Riverwalk.

It is indeed an experience of a lifetime being counted as one of the 35,000 Rotarian delegates to the 92nd RI Annual Convention, representing 30,000 clubs throughout 199 countries.
With all the information and inspiration, I left San Antonio with renewed enthusiasm to "Create Awareness and Take Action" in our club, our community and the world. I am honored with prestige to be a member of the Rotary Club of Cavite Export Processing Zone.
